What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine uses natural, whole plant extract remedies to treat a whole range of conditions. When you visit a medical herbalist, the herbalist will take up to an hour to discuss your complete health and to decide on the most appropriate treatment for you. Based on the information gained, the herbalist will prepare a herbal medicine treatment that is unique to each person. The Medical Herbalist goal is to identify and treat the underlying cause of your condition, rather than just treating the symptoms and uses the knowledge from intensive training and experience to maximise safety and efficacy.

It is common for two patients, with apparently the same condition to leave with two very different remedies. This is because, although the symptoms may appear similar, every person is unique. The herbalist skill is in selecting the right herbs from the many herbs available and blending a remedy that is as unique as the patient.

Herbal Medicine is for Everyone

Made from plant extracts and with no animal or mineral extracts, herbal remedies have far fewer side effects than conventional drugs. Rarely, a person may have an allergy to a particular plant or family of plants. Your herbalist will need to be made aware if this applies to you.

Herbal medicine can treat a wide range of conditions, the following list is indicative but not exhaustive.

  • Heart and circulatory conditions
  • Skin disorders such as psoriasis or eczema
  • Digestive and bowel problems
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Menopausal problems
  • Infections
  • Respiratory complaints like asthma
  • Muscular or joint aches and pains
  • Stress, anxiety or depression
  • Insomnia or sleep disturbances
  • Allergies
  • Promoting good health
  • plus many others

Visiting the Herbalist

The first consultation takes around an hour and follow up consultations last around half an hour. On the first consultation, the herbalist gets in depth information about your condition and about your health in general. The herbalist will prepare medicine according to your needs; at my practice, I dispatch your herbal remedy in the post by first class mail. I aim to dispatch your remedy the day after your consultation

Follow up appointments allow the herbalist to monitor progress and make any adjustments to the treatment as may be necessary. Herbal medicine is a profound therapy, but herbs have a more gentle action on the body than conventional pharmaceutical drugs and you may need to allow a little time to complete your treatment. The exact length of time a treatment depends on many factors, such as your own needs and the nature of your condition.

Pricing

Initial consultations cost £35.00

Follow up consultations cost £25.00.

You will also need to allow a little extra for the costs of the medicine, typically £5-8 per week.
